Located in the central part of the island, the Caldeira has a diameter of about 2 km and an average depth of 400 m, being covered by lush Laurissilva vegetation.  This is a caldera that resulted from successive phases of abatement of a volcano with 410 thousand years of age and whose last eruption occurred only 1000 years ago. At the bottom is a cone resulting from this last eruptive phase that closely resembles the shape of the island of Faial.
